FAQs
What about equipment? We have many of the required items for the shooting sports, including rifles, sandbags, jackets, scopes, and more. Various contributions from pro-shooting organizations provide us with the things we need. Some accessories and parts may not be available, however the basics are provided as part of the organization.
What if I have never shot a gun? We start off all participants at ground zero, assuming they know nothing about firearms. We also encourage full participation of parents of youth (the primary participant in the program), even if they have no firearms experience..
What if my youth has never fired a gun? We cover the basics of safety, and we move through the knowledge and skills needed to be a proper and safe shooter. In more rural areas around the country, many youth, both boys and girls, are known to take their first deer around the age of 10. This does require a certain level of maturity and comprehension ability that is not always associated with age. There are strength considerations to handle the rifles in some positions.
Guns in the hands of children? Is this safe? There are no recorded firearms related injuries in the competitive shooting sports... nationwide... for the past 20 years (and no records were kept prior to that point). This includes adults, and youth programs in thousands of locations across the country. Yes. It's safe.
Yeah, but we're talking about kids! See the sidebar to the right... Kim Rhode earned her gold medal at the Olympics at the age of 17. She had to start somewhere.
OK fine, but are you a bunch of right-wing wackos? We enjoy guns, and we will undoubtedly discuss politics at certain times, even including the youth as an educational process. Even still, most of the politics will revolve around the future of the sport, and do not always draw along party lines. There are many organizations that are "left-wing" and pro-gun as well. One might argue that the true gun-nuts are the people that would ban something without knowing anything... nay, refusing to learn anything about it. Oh yeah, we are not right-wing wackos.
